The Okaloosa County School District in northwest Florida will keep all its schools and facilities closed on Tuesday, October 13, due to recovery efforts following Hurricane Isaias. The decision, announced on Sunday, October 11, delays the return to classes that was scheduled for that Tuesday.

The official closure also includes Monday the 12th, although that date was already marked on the calendar as a workday for teachers, with no classes for students. The news for families is that students will also not return to the classrooms on Tuesday the 13th.

Why will the schools in Okaloosa remain closed?

According to the official update from the school district, published on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., teams are continuing to assess the impacts of Isaías, including flooding, power outages, fallen trees, and damage to school facilities.

The district explained that it needs more time for staff to prepare the centers and ensure a safe return for students and workers, while recovery efforts continue in the affected communities.

The suspension also applies to extracurricular activities, sports competitions, and other events related to schools, according to the official notice.

When will classes resume?

For now, the educational authorities plan to reopen schools and restore normal operations on Wednesday, October 14. However, that date is not set in stone: the district will continue to assess the conditions and will notify if any changes to the schedule are necessary.

The decision marks a change from the announcement made on October 7, when the district announced the preventive closure of schools for Thursday, October 8, and Friday, October 9, in anticipation of the storm. At that time, it was expected that students would return to classes on Tuesday, October 13, after the scheduled teacher workday on Monday.

How to check for upcoming updates

The district requested that families, employees, and the rest of the community consult only their official channels. Any changes regarding the reopening will be communicated through text messages, calls, institutional social media, official notices, and the Okaloosa School District website.

The announced measure affects the public school system of Okaloosa County; it does not constitute a closure order for all schools in the state of Florida.
