A 76-year-old man was hospitalized in stable condition after being struck by a driver who fled the scene early Sunday morning in Miami, according to local news reports.
The incident occurred shortly after 4:00 a.m. on Sunday in the 400 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue, at the intersection with Northwest 4th Street.
Units from the Miami Police and Miami Fire Rescue responded to the emergency call, provided medical assistance to the man on-site, and transported him to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.
The driver fled without offering assistance
The person responsible for the hit-and-run left the scene without stopping or identifying themselves, which makes the case a serious offense under Florida law.
State law requires every driver involved in an accident to stop, provide reasonable assistance, and exchange information with the authorities.
Leaving the scene when there are bodily injuries can result in up to 15 years in prison, fines of up to $10,000, and the revocation of the driver's license for at least three years.
The Miami Police continue to keep the investigation open and have not reported any arrests or the identification of the fleeing driver at this time.
Neighbors raise concerns about the lack of pedestrian protection
Merchants and residents in the area noted that the zone lacks a proper pedestrian crossing in front of the businesses, making that stretch a regular risk point for those crossing on foot.
Yoryanis Pérez, a merchant in the area, described the situation to Telemundo 51 with concern: "Quite ugly, but the traffic here is quite heavy."
Pérez indicated that it is common to see people crossing at that point: "A lady walks by here every afternoon, and cars stop to let her pass."
Although he acknowledged that he had never heard of an accident like this in the area, he considered it urgent to improve the infrastructure.
"They should put it in, they should put it in, but I think the crosswalk should be farther ahead of the traffic light. But there are many businesses here... If they put it in, it would be much better for pedestrians," he pointed out.
A runner with a risk history
The corridor on Northwest 42nd Avenue has been identified in municipal studies as a problematic area for pedestrians.
A traffic study conducted in March 2026 at the intersection of that avenue with NW 36th Street documented 867 stop line violations and 751 red light violations in just 12 hours.
This incident is not the first to shake southern Florida in recent times.
At the beginning of October, an elderly woman was left in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in another area of Miami, and last March authorities were searching for the driver who fled after a brutal hit-and-run under similar circumstances.
At the state level, hit-and-run incidents represent a persistent problem: in 2023, 159 pedestrians were killed in this type of incident in Florida, and pedestrians and cyclists accounted for 76% of all deaths due to this cause in the state, according to data from the Florida Highway Safety Agency.
They are requesting citizen information
The authorities requested the public's assistance in identifying the responsible driver.
Anyone with information can contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers anonymously at 305-471-TIPS (8477), via the toll-free line 1-866-471-TIPS, by sending a text message with the code "tips139" to 274637, or through the website crimestoppers305.com.
The police investigation is still open, and authorities have not ruled out any lines of inquiry as they search for the driver who left an elderly man injured in the early morning.
