The 30-year-old Cuban who was attacked with a metal bar in Milan, Italy stated to the police that days earlier he had intervened to defend a young woman who was being harassed by the man he identified as his attacker, according to the Italian newspaper Il Giorno.

"Perhaps he had recognized me," the Cuban stated, suggesting that the encounter might be connected to the subsequent attack.

The victim explained that she was waiting for the bus of line 90 when she saw a man approaching with a metal bar in his hand.

The individual began to hit him, first on one hand and then on the head and other parts of the body.

The aggression occurred on Viale Tibaldi, in front of a civic center, where several passersby witnessed the attack and alerted a local police patrol.

When the agents arrived, they found the Cuban lying on the ground, defenseless and with his hands over his head to protect himself, while he continued to be beaten with a 50-centimeter long iron bar used in construction.

The police intervened to stop the assault and arrested a 39-year-old Salvadoran citizen, who is being investigated for attempted homicide.

The Cuban was taken to the Polyclinic of Milan, where he received medical assistance for his injuries. Although his condition required hospital care, initial reports indicated that his life was not in danger.
