Lorenzo López Opedra, a 28-year-old Cuban, was arrested on Tuesday, October 13, in Amelia Earhart Park in Hialeah, accused of indecent exposure in front of an undercover officer.
The incident occurred around 5:40 PM in a wooded area of the park, according to Univision, which obtained access to the police report.
López Opedra encountered an undercover detective in the wooded area of the park and allegedly exposed himself and started to touch himself.
The detective withdrew without intervening immediately and contacted another agent by phone, to whom he provided a description of the suspect.
The second agent coordinated with two uniformed officers, who proceeded to detain López Opedra at the scene.
The young Cuban faces a charge of indecent exposure. A public defender has been assigned to him and a bail of 500 dollars has been set. His trial is scheduled for early November, according to the mentioned source.
Neighbors request increased security in the park
Amelia Earhart Park, located at 401 East 65th Street in Hialeah, is one of the largest recreational spaces in Miami-Dade, covering approximately 208 acres. It features playgrounds, trails, and an interactive farm for children.
Residents interviewed by Univision expressed their concern about what happened.
"It is something that everyone despises, and no one likes it when it happens to them. It is a behavior that wounds everyone," said a woman.
Another person requested to enhance security in the park: "More security, right? I mean, there is security, but just a little bit, to reinforce it a little more because otherwise, you know? This park is very large."
"It's a park where many children of all ages walk, older people who also deserve respect, and women," he added.
At least four arrests for similar incidents in 2026
With this detention, at least four arrests have been reported in 2026 for similar incidents in Amelia Earhart Park.
Univision reminded in its coverage that "a few months ago, three individuals were arrested for the same type of crime, which is indecent exposure."
In April 2026, three Cubans were arrested in the same wooded area during an undercover operation by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office.
The arrested individuals were Deibi Miguel Orpesa Martínez, 27 years old; Geriolsys Palenzuela Alcobre, 49; and Dienil Camejo, 61.
According to the police report from that operation, the three approached the undercover officer separately, exposed their genitals, and engaged in acts of self-stimulation. A bond of 500 dollars was set for each of them.
The police report from April described that area of the park as a place where public sexual behavior had been reported.
What does Florida law state about indecent exposure?
The statute 800.03 of Florida penalizes certain behaviors related to indecent exposure of sexual organs in public places or where they can be seen by others.
A first offense may constitute a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
The legislation also provides for harsher penalties for certain cases of recidivism, depending on criminal history and the conditions set forth in the regulation.
Another case related to alleged inappropriate sexual conduct in public spaces occurred in July, when a Cuban was arrested after an incident at Quail Roost Park in southwest Miami-Dade, involving an 11-year-old girl. In this case, the bail set was $7,500.
