Five months after being rescued from a property linked to the official singer-songwriter Raúl Torres, the dogs Luna and Rex are still looking for a family. The organization Bienestar Animal Cuba (BAC) made an urgent appeal this Tuesday for someone to provide them with a permanent home.
Both animals are approximately two years old, they are dewormed, vaccinated, and sterilized. According to BAC, they have regained weight and stability after being rescued, but they are still waiting for someone to adopt them responsibly.
"Today, months later, Luna and Rex are completely out of that situation. They have regained weight, stability, and a worthy life," the organization noted in its publication. However, it clarified that they are not simply looking to "place them" in any home: "We are looking for truly responsible adoption for them, with individuals who understand that adopting means a lifelong commitment."
Luna is a brown and white dog with spots and droopy ears, of Pointer or Bracco type. Rex has dark brown fur with a white spot on his muzzle and is of a similar breed. Those interested in adopting them can send a private message to the account @bac_org on Instagram.
The case gained significant attention last May when BAC and activist Javier Larrea reported on the conditions in which the animals were living on a property linked to the singer-songwriter: "Abandoned, without food, starving, howling in pain day and night, with dirty water bowls and no water."
The rescue, carried out on May 17, was described by the organization itself as a process that was "long, intense, and exhausting," with "hours of uncertainty, struggle, tension, and not giving up for a single second."
The complaint resonated particularly due to the identity of the individual involved. Raúl Torres —full name Raúl Alfonso Torres Rondón— is a singer-songwriter, a member of the National Assembly of People's Power, and one of the artists most closely associated with the Cuban government. He is the composer of songs such as "Cabalgando con Fidel" and "Soy por Fidel."
It was precisely that contrast that Larrea and BAC highlighted in their complaint: "This person preaches revolution and love for the people while letting innocent animals rot in his yard as if they were garbage. Pure hypocrisy."
BAC is an animal rights organization founded in January 2020 and driven by Larrea. Throughout 2026, it has documented multiple cases of abuse in Cuba. The organization has also faced intimidation campaigns from Cuban authorities against its members.
"Luna and Rex are still waiting for a home," concluded BAC in their post, asking those who cannot adopt to at least share the message: "Perhaps the family they have been waiting for months will see this post today."
