The head of the Medical and Emergency Services at the Faustino Pérez Provincial Clinical Surgical Hospital in Matanzas provided an update on the status of the patients admitted following the massive accident that occurred in Carbonera, in the Cárdenas municipality, on the highway to Varadero.

Dr. Laudelino Fernández Medina stated that none of the six injured individuals received at that institution are currently in life-threatening condition.

In statements reported on Facebook by journalist Carlos Manuel Bernal López, it was revealed that the multiple victim trauma protocol was activated from the very beginning “upon learning the conditions of the patients and where the incident took place,” he asserted.

According to Fernández Medina, only six of the 29 injured in the incident were taken to the center. The initial assessment revealed a red code (life-threatening), a yellow code, and four green codes.

"In the first 45 minutes, that evaluation was conducted, and among the patients assessed, so far none are in life-threatening conditions and they are being attended to by specialists," he clarified.

The physician also emphasized that none of the six have required mechanical ventilation, although he warned that the situation could evolve in any direction. "This condition can clearly change from red to yellow, or from yellow to red," he noted.

Another 22 injured individuals were evaluated at the Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy Military Hospital. The deputy director of that institution, Humberto Domínguez Suárez, reported that there were 21 adults, including four with neurosurgical traumas and two with cervical injuries, as well as one minor under observation without significant injuries. One patient with renal trauma underwent emergency surgery and would later be transferred to assess a possible spinal cord injury.

Faustino Pérez is the only hospital in Matanzas with computed tomography and neurosurgery services, which means that cases from the Military Hospital requiring those evaluations must be transferred there once stabilized.

The accident occurred on Friday when a passenger bus lost control and crashed into a metal pole in Carbonera. One person was declared dead at the scene, as confirmed by the provincial health director, Yamira López García. Due to the delay in the arrival of ambulances, it was neighbors and private drivers who assisted and transported the victims.

In 2025, 750 people died in traffic accidents in Cuba, representing an increase of 18.2% compared to the previous year, and in the first quarter of 2026, there have already been 153 reported deaths, according to the National Road Safety Commission.
