A trailer transporting a container loaded with solar panels overturned early Sunday morning in Catalina de Güines, a town in the municipality of Güines, in the province of Mayabeque, according to a report published on Facebook.
The accident occurred between four and five in the morning. The truck was overturned on its right side against a fence, in the middle of a residential area. At least three orange traffic cones were placed to mark the accident site, while curious neighbors and passersby gathered around the vehicle.
The driver was unharmed, according to the comments accompanying the post in the group "ACCIDENTES BUSES & CAMIONES for more experience and fewer victims!".
The alleged cause of the accident, according to witness comments, was a mechanical failure in the steering system. "The steering of the trailer broke," reads the description of the incident.
The images show the poor condition of the pavement in the section where the rollover occurred, a common issue on Cuban roads and one of the factors that exacerbates the risk of transporting heavy cargo on the island.
The accident occurs within the context of the intense logistical movement generated by the state program for the distribution and installation of photovoltaic systems, driven as a response to the serious energy crisis in the country. In September, China sent to Cuba 5,000 new solar systems in 200 containers, intended for rural areas, healthcare centers, children's circles, nursing homes, and bank branches.
The province of Mayabeque itself has received these equipment. At the beginning of the year, it was reported that 14 solar panel kits were installed in health centers in Güines, including the polyclinic of Catalina de Güines, the same locality where the accident occurred.
The overturning of trailers is a recurring phenomenon in Cuba, exacerbated by the deterioration of the vehicle fleet and the poor condition of the roads. In January, a trailer with containers overturned on the bridge of Calle 100 in Havana, and in September, a sugar-laden trailer experienced a similar accident in Florida, Camagüey, knocking down a power pole and leaving hundreds of families without electricity.
