At least 46 people have died this Wednesday, October 28, after two high-speed trains collided in the province of Toledo in Spain. The provisional toll was announced at 10:27 AM by Civil Protection sources cited by El Español, which also reports numerous injuries.

The accident occurred around 8:54 in the morning, near the town of Urda, in the province of Toledo. The trains involved are a Renfe AVE and a train from the private operator Iryo, which were covering the Madrid-Seville route.

According to initial indications communicated by sources from the Ministry of Transport to Europa Press, Renfe's AVE reportedly collided with the Iryo train from behind, causing two of its carriages to derail and fall down an embankment. This version is preliminary, and the circumstances of the incident still need to be clarified.

The initial death toll of 39, reported by the Emergency Service of Castilla-La Mancha at 10:09 a.m., later increased to at least 46 fatalities, according to Civil Protection sources. Authorities have deployed rescue and medical assistance teams in the area.

Emergency plan activated in Castilla-La Mancha

The regional government activated the Territorial Emergency Plan of Castilla-La Mancha (PLATECAM) at 9:15 AM, initially at operational level 1. Later, the situation was escalated to operational level 2, and the intervention of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) was requested.

Emergency services, including firefighters, the Civil Guard, Civil Protection, and medical resources, were dispatched to the scene of the incident. The Community of Madrid also sent eight fire brigades and eight units from SUMMA 112. Furthermore, a psychosocial support center for victims and their families was established at the Atocha station.

The mayor of Urda confirmed to Cadena SER that there were numerous injuries and explained that the accident occurred about eight kilometers from the municipality, in an area where no known issues had been reported on the tracks.

High-speed service between Madrid and Andalucía has been interrupted

The railway administrator Adif announced the suspension of operations on the high-speed line Madrid-Andalusia due to the collision. Renfe reported the possibility of making free changes and cancellations for the affected services.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his dismay over the accident and assured that he is in contact with the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, and the President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page. La Moncloa has suspended the schedule for the president and ministers planned for this Wednesday.

García-Page also canceled his schedule and traveled to Urda to follow the emergency response efforts. Meanwhile, the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, expressed his concern and urged prioritizing care for the victims and their families. The PP suspended its planned campaign events for the day.

Another railway tragedy in Spain nine months after Adamuz

The Toledo accident occurs nine months after the train disaster in Adamuz, Córdoba, which took place on January 18, 2026, resulting in a toll of 46 deceased individuals.

In that tragedy, which also involved an Iryo train, at least four Cuban citizens were affected, including a deceased woman and three injured individuals, as reported by CiberCuba at the time.
