A freight train derailed this Thursday in Camagüey, leaving 14 of its 27 cars off the tracks, which interrupted traffic on the Central Line and affected at least two passenger services heading to Havana.
The Cuban Railway Union (UFC) reported that the accident occurred at 3:10 p.m. at kilometer 477.0 of the Central Line, near the town of Piedrecita, in the province of Camagüey.
The convoy was the Extra Train 83, led by locomotive 52582, and was dedicated to transporting containers between the provinces of Artemisa and Holguín.
Of the 27 cars that made up the train, 25 were loaded.
According to the preliminary observations cited by the UFC, there was no reported damage to the cargo.
Following the derailment, the local railway brigade was activated, which began assessing the necessary work to restore train services.
The interruption of the Central Line forced the passenger train number 12 to stop in the city of Camagüey, which travels the route from Santiago de Cuba to Havana.
The provincial and railway authorities indicated that they were paying attention to the travelers.
The return to its origin station of the passenger train traveling from Guantánamo to Havana was also organized.
The convoy was at the Carrera Larga station, in the municipality of El Salvador, when its return was decided.
Ferrocarriles assured that measures were being taken to assist passengers affected by both disruptions.
As established by protocol for these events, an investigative commission was created to determine the causes and conditions that led to the accident.
This Thursday, another derailment was reported on the Cuban railway network, following several similar accidents that have occurred in recent months.
On June 12, another freight train carrying containers derailed in Guanajay, Artemisa, while traveling from the Angosta railway terminal in Mariel to Camagüey.
The incident occurred with no reported human injuries.
Nine days earlier, a passenger train traveling from Santiago de Cuba to Havana derailed in Las Tunas, near the town of Omaja, with about 900 people on board, including passengers and crew.
No injuries were reported in that accident either.
