The president Donald Trump posted this Friday on Truth Social his full support for the reelection of Republican congressman Carlos Giménez for the 28th District of Florida, just days before the general election on November 3, 2026.
“Congressman Carlos Giménez is doing a fantastic job representing Florida’s 28th District,” Trump wrote on the platform. In his message, the president highlighted the legislator's background before arriving in Congress: “A highly respected firefighter, community leader, and mayor of Miami-Dade County, Carlos has dedicated his life to serving his community.”
Trump also outlined the legislative priorities he attributes to Giménez: boosting the economy, reducing taxes and regulations, ensuring border security, curbing migrant crime, strengthening the armed forces, and protecting the Second Amendment. He concluded the message with a direct call to vote: "Carlos Giménez has my full and total support for reelection. Go out and vote for Carlos, he will never let you down!"
This is the second support that Trump gives to Giménez in 2026. The first was also published on Truth Social in February of this year, months before the August Republican primary was canceled due to lack of opposition, which allowed the congressman to advance automatically to the general election.
Giménez, born in Havana on January 17, 1954, emigrated with his family to the United States in November 1960, at the age of six, following the Cuban Revolution. He is the only member of the U.S. Congress born in Cuba. His public career began in the Miami Fire and Rescue Department, where he worked for 25 years and eventually became the chief, making him the first Cuban American to hold that position.
He later served as the city manager of Miami, a commissioner for Miami-Dade County, and the mayor of the same county from 2011 to 2020. He entered Congress in January 2021 and has represented District 28 since 2023, which includes Monroe County and areas in southwestern Miami-Dade, including Homestead and Cutler Bay.
In the 2024 elections, Giménez defeated his Democratic rival Phil "Felipe" Ehr —a retired Navy commander— with 64.6% of the votes, a lead of nearly 30 percentage points. Trump also won that district by more than 25 points in the same election, making it solidly Republican territory.
The contest on November 3 is a direct rematch: Giménez is once again facing Ehr, this time with the additional presence of independent candidate Eddy Rojas. In terms of financing, the congressman has the advantage: he has raised approximately 722,000 dollars, with about 541,000 available, compared to the 508,000 raised by Ehr.
Since his arrival in Congress, Giménez has been one of the main advocates for a policy of maximum pressure against the Cuban regime. In February of this year, he stated: “We have waited 67 years for this moment”, referring to the pressure measures promoted by the Trump administration. And in March, when asked about the future of Cuba, he affirmed: “He believes the days are near. I believe in the president”.
