The Republican congressman from Florida, Carlos Giménez, stated that the Cuban regime may be nearing its end, following remarks made this Saturday by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, during the Shield of the Americas summit, which took place in Doral with the attendance of 12 regional heads of state.

The legislator's statements were made during a welcome reception prior to the regional summit, where the Cuban American expressed his trust in Trump: “He believes that the days are near. I believe in the president.”

The legislator, born in Cuba and emigrated to the United States in 1960, stated that the Cuban regime is experiencing one of its moments of greatest weakness.

"If I had to bet, I would say that this regime's days are numbered, and I'm not talking about years; I'm talking about days," he stated.

According to Giménez, the Cuban government has never been in such a fragile situation as it is now.

The congressman also expressed his hope that U.S. authorities will file charges against Raúl Castro and other high-ranking officials of the regime for alleged crimes against American citizens.

Among them, he mentioned the shooting down in 1996 of two small planes from the humanitarian organization Brothers to the Rescue by the Cuban Air Force.

"These four Americans who were shot down by the Cuban government by order of Raúl Castro deserve justice," he stated.

Giménez added that, although three decades have passed since that incident, the victims still deserve justice to be served.

“Yes, 30 years later; it may be delayed justice, but they deserve justice,” he said.

The statements come amid a context of increasing political pressure from Washington on the Cuban regime and on the eve of the regional summit called by Trump in Florida to address issues of security and cooperation in the hemisphere.
