Rubio turns the G20 summit in Atlanta into a football lesson for foreign ministers

The Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded the G20 ministerial meeting in Atlanta this Saturday with an informal diplomatic gesture: he invited several of his fellow foreign ministers to the college football game between the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs, held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the host city.

"Happy to present to my fellow foreign ministers the quintessential American sport of football and welcome them to Gator Nation," wrote the Secretary of State on X after escorting the visitors to the stands of the stadium.

Among the chancellors who accepted the invitation were Pablo Quirno (Argentina), Roberto Velasco (Mexico), Radosław Sikorski (Poland), Penny Wong (Australia), Johann Wadephul (Germany), Toshimitsu Motegi (Japan), Kaja Kallas (High Representative of the European Union), Ed Miliband (United Kingdom), and S. Jaishankar (India).

Rubio was seen on the sidelines before the start of the match, dressed in Gators gear and talking with the team's athletic director, Scott Stricklin, according to images shared on social media.

The visit also had a personal component: the son of the Secretary of State, Anthony Rubio, plays as a running back for the Florida Gators in his fourth season. The team arrived at the game ranked 17th in the country, while Georgia held the third position in the national ranking.

The match was held exceptionally in Atlanta—instead of the usual stadium in Jacksonville—due to renovation work at the traditional venue of this historic university rivalry, popularly known as "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party."

The exit to the stadium marked the end of two days of intense and tense diplomacy. The G20 ministerial meeting in Atlanta concluded without a joint statement, stalled by divisions over Ukraine, the Middle East, and U.S. tariffs. Instead, the presidency released a document outlining general priorities.

The official family photo was also canceled after more than a third of the participants threatened to not appear alongside Russian Foreign Minister Serguéi Lavrov. U.S. officials explained that Rubio made this decision to prevent the controversy from overshadowing the substantive discussions.

Journalist Eric Daugherty summarized the moment with irony on X: "Rubio just showed up at the Florida-Georgia game in Atlanta after endless hours of work with foreign leaders at the G20. If it were up to him, he'd watch college football for 12 straight hours, so we should feel lucky that he works as hard as he does."

Rubio, a graduate of the University of Florida in 1993, is a declared supporter of the Gators and has made the "Gator Chomp" gesture at public events, including the opening bell ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange last September.

The next G20 meeting will be the leaders' summit scheduled to take place in Miami, at the Trump National Doral resort, in December 2026.
