The National Weather Service (NWS) declared a flash flood emergency on Monday, November 2, in Palm Bay and West Melbourne, in Brevard County, Florida, and classified the threat of damage as catastrophic. The agency urged residents to move immediately to higher ground due to a potentially life-threatening situation.
In a bulletin issued at 9:34 a.m. Eastern Time, the NWS reported that between 12 and 15 inches of rain had already fallen in the affected area, according to radar and rain gauge data, and warned that an additional three to five inches could still be recorded. The warning was extended until 11:45 a.m. this Monday, although conditions may change with new bulletins.
Closed schools and flooded roads in Brevard
The heavy rains forced the cancellation of classes in the public schools of Brevard County this Monday. The local Catholic schools and the courts also closed, according to local media outlet ClickOrlando.
The West Melbourne Police warned of flooded and impassable streets, including sections of Minton Road: northbound near Helen Street and southbound at the intersection with US 192, according to the same report. Authorities advised avoiding unnecessary travel.
In a broadcast from The Weather Channel, their meteorologists displayed images of heavy rainfall and noted that the Brevard transportation service buses were experiencing delays until further notice. The coverage also described intense rain in areas of the Space Coast, including Merritt Island.
The NWS warns of an especially dangerous situation
The emergency area includes Palm Bay, West Melbourne, and nearby communities such as Melbourne, Malabar, Grant-Valkaria, Micco, Floridana Beach, and Melbourne Beach. The NWS warned of flash flooding in streets, low-lying areas, urban zones, and waterways, posing a direct risk to residents' lives.
The official message was clear: seek higher ground immediately and do not attempt to cross flooded routes. The agency advises against traveling unless it is necessary to escape a threatened area or to comply with an evacuation order.
Extreme rains are affecting various areas of Florida
This episode represents an escalation compared to the previous weather warnings that affected other areas of the state. On Sunday, CiberCuba reported on the flood watch in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach and on impassable roads due to rain in Okeechobee. These prior alerts pertain to areas different from the emergency now declared in Brevard.
Residents should check for updates from the NWS in Melbourne and follow the guidance from local authorities before leaving home, especially if they live in flood-prone areas.
