Pia Dandiya, a 39-year-old Democrat, daughter of Indian immigrants and former teacher and school principal, won the elections to the United States Congress for Florida's 22nd District against the Republican Casey Askar, who was supported by President Donald Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis.
The victory of Dandiya took place in a redesigned district before the legislative elections on November 3, which is considered favorable to Republicans, as reported by CBS News.
“Thank you #FL22! I feel honored and grateful to represent my home state. Thank you to everyone who knocked on doors, made phone calls, donated, and believed in me. Now the real work begins!” can be read today on her profile on X.
Her election also represents a historical milestone: she will be the first person of South Asian descent to represent Florida in the United States House of Representatives.
Who is Pia Dandiya?
Born and raised in Palm Beach County, Florida, Pia Dandiya initially built a professional career in education.
According to a profile published by Naples Daily News, she studied Government at Harvard University and earned a master's degree in Education from Boston University.
She began her career as a mathematics teacher in low-income communities through the Teach for America program.
He later worked in teacher training and took on responsibilities in school administration.
At the age of 28, she became the founding principal of Democracy Prep Endurance High School, a public school in Harlem, New York.
Her experience in the classroom became one of the main elements of her presentation to voters, along with her status as a mother and her professional background outside of electoral politics.
From the classrooms to the White House and Apple
Dandiya was selected for the White House Fellows program for the 2020-2021 period, a leadership training initiative that allows participants to work directly with federal government institutions.
During that period, he held roles in the U.S. Department of Education. His involvement spanned the administrations of Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
Subsequently, he worked at Apple, where he developed collaborative initiatives with public organizations related to education, healthcare, and government services.
Before presenting himself to Congress, he had not held an elected public office.
He currently resides in Palm Beach Gardens with his wife and son.
The cost of living, housing, and healthcare: their main proposals
During his campaign, Dandiya focused much of his speech on the economic difficulties faced by residents of South Florida.
Among their priorities were the reduction of housing costs, property insurance, and medications, as well as the protection of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
It also advocated for investments in public education, preschool programs, vocational training, and job opportunities for young people.
In terms of housing, he proposed encouraging the construction of affordable properties for middle-income families and studying the conversion of vacant office spaces into residential areas.
Another of his concerns was the high cost of property insurance in Florida, due to the state's exposure to hurricanes, flooding, and other climate risks.
Dandiya also expressed support for measures to reduce the price of medications and expand access to healthcare.
During the campaign, he aimed to attract independent voters and moderate Republicans, as well as mobilize Democratic voters.
A victory in a district redrawn by the Republicans
The election of District 22 garnered special attention because its boundaries were changed in 2026, during the electoral redistribution process initiated by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.
The new constituency covers a large area of southern Florida: it includes parts of Palm Beach and Broward counties, encompasses Hendry County, and extends westward, crossing the Everglades to reach areas in Collier County, including Marco Island.
The redesign brought together communities with different political, economic, and demographic characteristics, leading to a contest for an open seat.
Dandiya secured the Democratic nomination in the August 2026 primaries, defeating attorney Kaysia Earley.
Askar secured the Republican nomination after defeating several challengers from his party.
The 57-year-old businessman from Naples, a veteran of the Marine Corps, developed his career in the restaurant franchise sector.
A historic triumph for South Asian representation
The election of Dandiya marks the arrival of a South Asian representative from Florida to the federal House of Representatives.
In her victory speech, recorded by CBS Miami, Dandiya recalled her family's immigrant roots and criticized the electoral redesign pushed by Republicans.
Her victory came on an election day when Republicans retained significant state positions in Florida, while Democrats managed to win several contested congressional races.
For Dandiya, the outcome also represents the transition from a career dedicated to education, public administration, and the technology sector to his first legislative responsibility.
The newly elected congresswoman is scheduled to take her seat in January 2027, when the term of the new U.S. Congress begins.
