"The American people have given us another chance": Former President Bill Clinton reacts to the Democratic victory

The former U.S. President Bill Clinton celebrated this Wednesday the victory of the Democratic Party in the legislative elections held this Tuesday and called on his colleagues to use the results to regain public trust, address the economic needs of families, and work with those who did not support their candidates.

In a statement posted on his Facebook account, Clinton congratulated the elected Democrats across the country and thanked those who participated in the campaigns that enabled the party to regain control of Congress.

Clinton highlighted the diversity of the elected candidates and assured that their victories reflect the strength of the Democratic Party.

He also interpreted the results as a message from Americans regarding the priorities the federal government should address in the coming years.

“The American people have given us a clear directive: to prioritize their needs over the chaos and corruption that come from Washington,” he stated.

For Clinton, that responsibility includes easing family expenses, protecting healthcare, managing the national debt, and ending policies that, in her view, contribute to the rising cost of living.

The former president also called for measures to control the national debt and hold accountable those in public office.

His statements come after an election marked by widespread voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's economic and foreign policies, particularly regarding the rise in fuel prices and the conflict with Iran.

Beyond celebrating the results, Clinton urged Democrats not to interpret the victory as a mandate to ignore those who voted for other political options.

“Last night’s victory gives us an opportunity and a responsibility to rebuild trust,” he asserted.

The former president insisted that this task must be carried out "with humility and determination, and with an open hand, not a closed fist, towards those who did not vote for our candidates."

Clinton concluded his statement with a call for political cooperation and to take advantage of the new majorities obtained at the polls.

“I have always believed that we do better when we work together. Now, the American people have given us another opportunity to prove it. Let’s make the most of it,” he stated.

In the message accompanying the statement, the former president also stated that Tuesday had been "a great day for our democracy," although he warned that the electoral results must be translated into political action.

The Democratic victory ended the Republican control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, after the party achieved significant wins in traditionally conservative states, including Texas, Kansas, and Iowa.

The outcome represents a significant change for Trump's second administration, which will have to face the last two years of its term with both chambers of Congress in the hands of the opposition.

Before the elections, Trump had warned that he would become the "Mr. Veto" if the Democrats regained Congress, anticipating that he would block legislative initiatives from the opposition to force them to negotiate.

The Republican weariness was already reflected in the polls published before the vote, which showed strong dissatisfaction with the cost of living, gas prices, and the war against Iran.

The Democratic triumph also sparked criticisms within the Republican Party itself. Some leaders and strategists blamed Trump for the defeats, while others defended his leadership and attributed the results to weak candidates and the usual challenges faced by the governing party in midterm elections.

Florida was one of the exceptions to the Democratic advance. There, Republican Byron Donalds won the gubernatorial election against Democrat David Jolly, while Ashley Moody retained for her party the federal Senate seat that was previously held by Marco Rubio.

Clinton had participated in the Democratic campaign in Florida. In October, his participation in a rally supporting David Jolly in Hollywood, Florida, was announced as part of the Democrats' efforts to regain a governorship that has been held by Republicans since 1999.
