A pilot was seriously injured on Wednesday after a small aircraft crashed in a wooded area of New Smyrna Beach, in Volusia County, Florida, where he had to be located and rescued by a police helicopter.

The accident occurred near Turnbull Bay Road and was reported around 2:22 p.m. by the air traffic control tower at New Smyrna Beach Airport, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency teams initially struggled to locate the aircraft. The crew of Air One, the helicopter from the Volusia Sheriff's Office, spotted the wreckage from the air and landed nearby to assist the pilot.

When the rescuers arrived at the aircraft, they found the pilot conscious and able to speak. The man was the sole occupant of the aircraft, which, as reported by ClickOrlando, was a single-engine plane.

Emergency teams managed to extract him from the wreckage of the aircraft and provided medical attention on-site before transporting him by Air One helicopter to a nearby hospital.

The rescue involved agents from the Volusia Sheriff's Office, police officers and firefighters from New Smyrna Beach, county rescue and medical emergency personnel, as well as agents from the Port Orange Police Department.

The photos released by the authorities show the crashed plane among trees and rescuers transporting the injured person on a stretcher to the helicopter.

So far, the identity of the pilot and the causes of the accident have not been disclosed. Additionally, no further details have been provided regarding his medical condition after being admitted to the hospital.
