Three baseball players born in Cuba are competing for the Silver Slugger Award for the 2026 season, following the announcement of the finalists made by MLB and Louisville Slugger on Thursday. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, November 17.
Yordan Álvarez (Houston Astros), Randy Arozarena (Seattle Mariners), and Miguel Vargas (Chicago White Sox) represent Cuba in the American League, while the National League does not have any Cuban finalists in this edition.
Álvarez arrives as the top favorite of the season. The player from tunero played over 150 games for the first time in his career and dominated the Major League offensive: he led Major League Baseball in batting average (.316), on-base percentage (.432), slugging (.601), and walks (109), while also hitting 42 home runs—a personal best—with 106 runs batted in and an OPS of 1.033. His direct rival in the designated hitter category is Ben Rice from the New York Yankees.
The Habanero already has a Silver Bat in his display case, awarded in 2022, and this week he faces an unprecedented awards schedule: the announcement of the American League MVP is expected on Wednesday, November 12, just five days before the Silver Bat. By the end of October, he had already received two Players Choice awards: Outstanding Player and American League Comeback Player of the Year.
Arozarena, born in Arroyos de Mantua, Pinar del Río, received his third selection to the All-Star Game in 2026 at the age of 31. The Mariners outfielder led the American League with 113 runs scored, hit 26 home runs, drove in 79 runs, and posted an OPS of .865 in 154 games.
In August, he became the first Cuban with six consecutive seasons of at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in MLB. Despite four prior nominations —2021, 2022, 2023, and now 2026— the player from Pinar del Río has never won the award. He competes in the outfield against eight rivals, including Mike Trout, who is seeking his tenth Silver Slugger.
The case of Miguel Vargas adds a family dimension to the story. The Habanero, son of the legendary third baseman for Industriales, Lázaro Vargas —a double Olympic gold medalist in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996—, had the best season of his career in 2026: 33 home runs, .837 OPS, 93 runs batted in, 106 scored, and 22 stolen bases in 159 games with the White Sox, earning him his first selection to the All-Star Game.
He was the first player in the history of the franchise to achieve 30 doubles, 30 home runs, 20 steals, and 100 runs scored in a single season, and only the fourth third baseman in MLB history to reach that combination, following Mike Schmidt, Chipper Jones, and José Ramírez.
This is the first nomination for the Silver Bat for Vargas, who will need to surpass Junior Caminero (Rays), who recorded 42 home runs, 101 RBIs, and the highest average bat speed in MLB (79.4 mph) in 2026.
The presence of three Cuban finalists in the same edition of the Silver Slugger reflects the significance that players from the island have achieved in the offensive elite of Major League Baseball, in contrast to the decline of baseball within Cuba, where the exodus of talent continues and the national system lacks an agreement with MLB for the direct hiring of players residing on the island.
The winners of the Silver Bat 2026 will be announced on Tuesday, November 17, in what could be a historic night for Cuban baseball abroad.
