The elected governor of Florida, Byron Donalds, issued a warning to his fellow Republicans following the electoral defeats of last Tuesday: citizens do not maintain unconditional loyalty to any party and can quickly change their vote when they feel their concerns are not being addressed.
"The voters of this country are not really tied to any party," Donalds stated during an interview with Lara Trump on the program My View with Lara Trump, which aired on Saturday on Fox News.
The Republican pointed out that everyday economic difficulties should take a central place in his party's priorities.
"I also believe that, as a party, we need to truly focus on what it's like for people to get up every day and make ends meet," he expressed.
Donalds stated that the Republican Party must pay more attention to the economic concerns of Americans, rather than assuming that those who have supported it in the past will continue to do so regardless of the decisions made by its leaders.
The politician was particularly critical of Washington's performance during the first two years of President Donald Trump's second term.
“In Washington, there were some truly missed opportunities,” he stated, before mentioning two issues he considers essential for Republicans: voter ID legislation and the border security priorities of the Trump Administration.
"The SAVE America Act (Law to Safeguard the Eligibility of American Voters) should have been approved a long time ago," he stated.
The legislative proposal seeks to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register as a voter in federal elections and to establish identification requirements to exercise the right to vote.
Although the House of Representatives approved the initiative in February 2026, the measure became stalled in the Senate and did not become law.
Donalds also questioned why Congress had not turned some of the immigration policies promoted by Trump into legislation.
When referring to the president's border security package, he stated that "it should have gone through the United States Senate" and added: "I believe there was a true failure there."
The elected governor linked those missed opportunities to the dissatisfaction that, in his view, ultimately influenced voter behavior during the midterm elections.
"I believe that people simply feel frustration. I have been telling many of my colleagues that the voters in this country are not really tied to any party," he insisted.
Donalds explained that voters consider both political decisions and their impact on household economics.
"They are looking at these problems, they are looking at their wallets, and they can change very quickly. I think this was a lesson for the Republicans for the future," he warned.
His statements come after the Democrats managed to take control of the House of Representatives and the Senate away from the Republicans in the elections on November 3, a setback that will leave President Trump facing a Congress with an opposing majority when the new legislative session begins in January 2027.
Previously, Donalds had expressed similar concerns. On Wednesday, the politician had already acknowledged that many Republican supporters chose not to vote or supported Democratic candidates, a situation he attributed to dissatisfaction with fuel prices and the lack of legislative progress.
"We have many Republicans who either did not vote or chose to vote for Democrats," he declared during an appearance on Fox & Friends.
In that interview, he specifically mentioned the prices of gasoline and diesel, and stated that consumer frustration ultimately harmed his party electorally.
Unlike what happened in numerous states, Donalds managed to win the gubernatorial election in Florida against the Democrat David Jolly, in a contest that was closer than expected.
During his campaign, the Republican had focused some of his proposals on reducing the cost of home insurance, facilitating access to housing, and easing the everyday expenses of families.
After learning of his victory, Donalds publicly thanked Trump for his support and promised to work on reducing costs in Florida. He also stated that he would govern for all residents of the state, including those who did not vote for him.
