At least 1,238 homes were affected in Havana by the tornado, 123 of them suffered a total collapse

Thousands of people in the Cuban capital lost their homes and belongings after the impact of the devastating meteorological phenomenon.

The vice president of the Council of the Provincial Administration in Havana, Juan Montalvo, assured on the television program Mesa Redonda that the tornado impact A total of 1,238 homes were affected.

In this sense, the first secretary of the Party in Havana, Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar, explained to Granma Of the total damages, 123 were total collapses, 625 were partial. In addition, 224 properties completely lost their roofs and "124 to some extent." The rest of the homes suffered minor damage.

Montalvo also explained that collapses were recorded in what he called type 1 homes, which he defined as "comfortable homes." In his opinion, under normal conditions the structure of these homes does not suffer damage from the impact of these meteorological phenomena.

In addition to the property damage, the tornado caused death of at least four people while 195 were injured.

The Provincial Administration official also said that seven health institutions were affected. Besides of Daughters of Galicia Maternal Hospital, which had to be evacuated, damage was recorded in four polyclinics, a nursing home and a pharmacy, among others.

In the educational field, he pointed out that there are 46 schools "with different degrees of impact", a day care center, as well as two student residences.

More than 13,000 telephone services were also affected, according to what Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella, Minister of Communications, told the official media.

At the moment, the island's authorities have not revealed the cost of the damage, which has left thousands of Cubans in the street.
