Note:
This is a very American recipe. They are enjoyed worldwide and have different names, such as pancakes, hotcakes, and in Cuba, arepas. They are primarily made for breakfast, although Cubans also prepare them for snacks.
Ingredients:
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder (Royal) or baking soda
  • 1 pinch of salt
Instructions:

Mix the dry ingredients together. Then add the milk and whisk thoroughly to avoid any lumps.

In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil until it covers the entire surface. Then pour a small amount of the arepa mixture. Use medium heat to cook these little cakes. Flip them when you notice small bubbles forming on the surface. Repeat this process until all the batter is used up, adding the second tablespoon of oil when the skillet appears too dry.

In Cuba, we usually eat them with honey, jams, or even with sugar and pieces of fruit. In Spain, they add chocolate cream, bananas, and whipped cream. Similarly, around the world, people add different toppings. They can also be made with savory fillings.
