Note:
This is a very American recipe. They are consumed worldwide and have different names, for example, pancakes, tortitas, and in Cuba, arepas. They are primarily prepared for breakfast. However, Cubans also make them for snacks.
Ingredients:
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of wheat flour
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder (Royal) or baking soda
  • 1 pinch of salt
Instructions:

Mix the dry ingredients. Then add the milk and beat it well so that there are no lumps.

In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and let it cover the entire surface. Then pour a small amount of the arepas mixture. Use medium heat to make these little cakes. You should flip it when you see that your pancake is filled with small bubbles. Repeat this process until the dough is finished and add the second tablespoon of oil when you notice that the skillet is very dry.

In Cuba, we usually eat them with honey, jams, or even with sugar and bits of fruit. In Spain, they are served with chocolate cream, little bananas, and whipped cream. And so, around the world, different things are added to them. They can also be made with savory fillings.
