One person dead and another 11 injured of varying severity is the most serious consequence of the electric motorcycle fires that occurred during 2020 in Cuba, of which 186 occurred inside homes.
Given the high frequency of these events, the authorities warn of indiscipline that can cause accidents of this type, one of them is the violation of the protection of the MBS, the device that monitors the battery work system.
In a report broadcast on state television, an expert recommended that the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) always use the manufacturer's original chargers for the motorcycle model in question.
“The temperature in the room where this battery is being charged must not exceed 60 degrees. At 65 degrees they generate dangerous temperatures that can cause them to ignite,” he said.
Another safety measure is to always avoid ensuring that there is no combustible material nearby during the period in which the means of transport is loaded.
“When the service motorcycle arrives from the street, let it cool at room temperature before starting charging, because there have been cases where the motorcycles arrive and we charge them while still hot, at those temperatures, and we generate the explosion” , he added.
Another MININT official denounced that many batteries that people are importing into the country provide false data.
“They are batteries that on the box, in the documents, even on the seal, say that they are 72 volts x 35 amps, when in reality they are 72 volts x 20 amps, and we adapt a charger or continue using the same charger that we had. the motorcycle originally,” he stressed.
This is not the first time that experts have warned of the increase in fires on electric motorcycles. The number of cases decreased during the confinement due to the coronavirus pandemic, but once normality is returning, cases are expected to increase again.
In theIn the first six months of the year, 263 incidents were recorded of this type, 42 more than in the same period in 2019, as reported by the Cuban Fire Department.
Havana has the worst records, with 47.2 percent of the total accidents, followed by Artemisa (10.2 percent); Matanzas (9.5 percent) and Villa Clara (7.6 percent).
According to data provided by Jercy González Longo, specialist from the agency's National Extinction Department, in the first quarter of this year there was a daily average of 1.5 electric motorcycle events and 43.8 per month, most of them inside garages and buildings. household.
Just under half of the accidents occurred between 9:00 at night and 7:00 in the morning, a time of greatest danger because many people are already resting. Of the 263 events, 45 occurred with the battery charger connected to power.
