Sentenced to nine years in prison For the alleged crimes of outrage to the symbols of the country, contempt, defamation of institutions and organizations and of heroes and martyrs, attack, resistance and public disorders, the rapper's freedom has been demanded by Cuban activists and international organizations and not governmental.

“Maykel was sentenced to nine years in prison for several common crimes. His health situation remains unchanged. “We don't have his medical papers either,” the sources recalled, highlighting the judicial farce he faced and the ailments that have plagued his health since he was confined behind bars.

Arrested in mid-May 2021,The rapper has been having health problems for months, with swollen lymph nodes for unknown reasons and under poor medical supervision, despite constant complaints to that effect.

Castillo, winner of two Latin Grammy Awards for the song "Patria y Vida", co-written with other musicians, began showing symptoms last year. His health situation was publicly known in November, but still no one knows what illness he has.

“In good spirits, Maykel remains as best he can, adapting to the new company and paying attention to all of us,” the sources indicated, insisting on not giving credence to the speculations about the artist's situation that circulate daily on social networks. among them those that place Osorbo in negotiations with State Security for his departure from the country.

At the end of August, the activist assured from prison thatHe did not rule out the route of exile to obtain his freedom. In conversation with the Facebook channel Cántalo TV, Osorbo learned that efforts are being made to remove him from Cuba, although it was not specified through what means.

"If a door were opened to me right now, where I could go into exile, brother, I'll go out. Do you understand? I'll go out with the commitment, but on my feet," the rapper confessed in the phone call.

At least 13 international organizations demanded at the end of June the release of Cuban artists Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Osorbo, relevant figures of the San Isidro Movement.

"Given that the Cuban State has a tendency to stigmatize Otero and Castillo due to their critical profile, we urge the embassies with a presence on the island, the European Union, the UN Special Procedures, the IACHR, and the entire international community to speak out publicly against this clear violation of human rights and promote by all possible meansthe immediate release of Maykel Castillo Perez and Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara", the organizations requested through a statement.

Regarding the sentences of both artists, the NGO Cubalex - defender of human rights and in favor of the release of political prisoners in Cuba - considered that the sentences against Otero Alcántara and OsorboThey have a political and exemplary objective to prevent society from expressing itself freely..

"From there we see the great danger of this sentence, with an evident exemplary effect. The assessment was completely subjective, discretionary and with a completely illegitimate purpose that promotes a culture of self-censorship," the organization said.
