The Cuban passport was ranked 80th globally in 2023 on the list of the world's most powerful passports, according to the index based on the number of destinations accessible to its holders without a visa.
The Cuban travel document has dropped one position after ranking 79th in 2022.
The new list -prepared as every year by the consulting firm Henley & Partners- revealed that Cubans in 2023 need a visa for 162 countries and have free access to 65 destinations.
A large number of countries where Cubans do not need a visa are in Africa. In Europe, they include Belarus, Montenegro, Moldova, North Macedonia, and the Russian Federation.
In Latin America, the list shows that Cuba has visa-free access for Bolivia and Guyana. It is noteworthy that the report does not include Nicaragua as a visa-free territory for citizens of the island.
In the Latin American region, Cuba is only surpassed by Haiti when it comes to countries with the least powerful passports. Citizens of the neighboring Caribbean nation have access to only 49 countries without a visa.
Meanwhile, in the opposing position is Chile -in 18th place- which has visa-free access to 174 countries, a number very close to several European nations.
The United States ranks seventh, with visa-free access to 186 destinations.

Cuba's historical ranking shows that the island dropped from 69th place in 2006 to 80th this year.
The most powerful passports in the world in 2023
Japan has the most powerful passport in the world for the fifth consecutive year, according to the Henley Passport Index 2023.
Japanese citizens can visit 193 out of 227 destinations without a visa, while citizens of Singapore and South Korea are tied for second place in the index: they can travel to 192 countries visa-free.
Germany and Spain rank third, with visa-free access to 190 destinations worldwide.
In fourth place, with 189 destinations accessible without a visa: Finland, Italy, and Luxembourg.
Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden rank fifth (188 destinations); in sixth place are France, Ireland, Portugal, and the United Kingdom (187 destinations).
Completing the top 10 are: Belgium, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States (in 7th place with 186); Australia, Canada, Greece, and Malta (in 8th place with 185); Hungary and Poland (in 9th place with 184); and Lithuania and Slovakia (in 10th place with 183).
According to the Henley Passport Index 2023, global travel currently reaches about 75% of pre-pandemic levels.
The global passport ranking is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
