Neighbors catch cell phone thief in Havana: "He was carrying a backpack full of things"

This Thursday, a group of people managed to catch a thief who in the middle of Tight Havana man stole a cell phone from a woman and was caught with a backpack full of other people's belongings.

"This guy that we have subdued, today he stole a phone on 23 between E and F. They captured him, I hope they don't release him and that they give him a few years"wrote an Internet user on Facebook who accompanied his testimony with several photos.

The source explained that the alleged thief went up to the fourth floor of a building and robbed a woman who was at work.

"You have to be careful with this type of people. He was walking with a backpack full of things and a wallet with money. If someone in the area of El Vedado was robbed or lost something, they can go to accuse him and collect his belongings", he concluded.

In the photos you can see a subject wearing black shorts, a white pullover and tennis shoes while being held by several passers-by.

Scenes like the one described have become increasingly frequent in Cuba in recent months, amid a growing wave of robberies and citizen insecurity that keeps the population in suspense.

In May, residents of San Miguel del Padrón, also in Havana, beat to a thief who assaulted a 12-year-old boy to steal a phone.

Also last month, residents of the city of Guantánamo They captured and beat a man when he tried to steal a bicycle in broad daylight. In that case, images that circulated on social networks showed dozens of people on the street to witness the capture of the thief, who was later handed over to the police.

While crimes increase in Cuba and complaints from the population about the insufficient response of the police, the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) assured in recent days that arrests most criminals in just 48 hours.

In statements collected by Latin Press, officials of this organization affirmed that there is no impunity for crimes, and attributed the proliferation of such news to an alleged "media war" that is being promoted against Cuba from abroad.

Colonel Manuel Valdés, head of the confrontation body of the Technical Directorate of Investigations (DTI), expressed that all crimes that are reported are investigated. These statements are in line with an editorial in the newspaper Granma, official organ of the Communist Party, which accused the US and the independent press of exaggerate the crime issue and violence in the country.
