Cuban professional boxer Yordenis Ugás came out in defense of the singer Yotuel Romero, whom some Cubans criticize on social networks as an “opportunist.”
In a direct message on his social networks, Ugás responded to a follower who made a critical comment about the musician, who is one of the authors of Homeland and Life, in addition to being one of the most visible activists among those who demand change and democracy in Cuba.
"Me you him. In Cuba you shouted Patria y Muerte because it suited you; Now in the US you shout Homeland and Life because it suits you. Jiiiiii, double standards, hypocrite [sic],” said the user identified on networks as Annia Rmp, whose profile creates and replicates typical content of sympathizers of the Cuban regime.
The boxer addressed her with great respect, despite the disrespectful and "cyber-clear" publications of the Cuban, who claims to reside in Germany.
“We can all change. It is never too late to change for the better,” Ugás told him in his direct address, breaking a spear for Yotuel and his commitment to freedom and democracy in Cuba.
Ugás considered that those people who defend remaining entrenched in their ideas are mistaken, and who consider it a "betrayal" or "double standard" to assume other perspectives in life. Or those who demand silence from others, accusing them of not having spoken “before”, when they were in Cuba.
“We Cubans are so wrong, that if you didn't speak before, you can't speak now... No, To be free we need millions of Cubans to change their minds, millions of Cubans to realize the Truth“, the boxer wrote on his networks.
In addition, the boxer showed his gratitude to Yotuel for the song he wrote and which became an anthem for Cubans who want Freedom. “As a Cuban, I feel grateful when a public figure takes his platform, his moment, to talk about our community, to talk about our country,” he said.
“He [Yotuel] made a song, he has been 100% committed to the exile, to the freedom of our country, he has been an incredible ambassador and you just have to have respect for him, because he is a great activist,” he stated.
Recalling his past as a member of the national boxing team (15 years ago), Ugás suggested that we all have a past, and that there is nothing wrong with being critical of our ideas and actions.
“We all have the right to change. Nobody has the Truth in their hand. No one has to question anyone's change... If the 11 or 9 million in Cuba are never going to change, then we will never have a country, we will always be exiles and Cuba will always be what it is today.”the boxer reasoned.
Yotuel, that He accompanied Ugás on his way out to the ring in his fight against Mario Barrios While singing Patria y Vida, he was proud of having escorted the champion, despite not having achieved victory.
A champion, Yotuel said, is “someone who represents much more than his own success, someone who turns each assault into a window to visualize the freedom of his people on the island”.
“That is why you are incredible and that is why our people will have no way to thank you. THANK YOU for leaving us high, despite the scars. We all admire you brother. Because you are a CHAMPION with or without a crown, as many media outlets said yesterday,” he added.
After his defeat against Barrios, Ugás hinted at the possibility of retiring from professional boxing. “My family doesn't want me to be in this anymore."said the champion, ensuring that his retirement from the ring would not mean the end of his activism for the freedom of political prisoners and of the Cubans oppressed by the dictatorship.
