They beat a man who was spending the night outside a school in Matanzas

Ernesto Macías, a homeless man who was spending the night in the doorway of a school in the city of Matanzas, was beaten by individuals who were trying to rob him.

And helpless man who spent the night outside a school in the city of Matanzas was struck on Friday night by a group of individuals, apparently with the intention to steal your money which he supposedly had in his possession.

A publication in a Facebook group this Saturday he denounced the attack on the Cuban, who said his name was Ernesto Macias and reside in the Cerro municipality, in Havana, but who had remained for days at the gate of the Mártires del Goicuría school, in the town of Versalles, in Matanzas.

“He is not completely well in his intellect, he is sitting there day and night in that place,” said user Maide Tápanes, in a post on the profile “Everything for buying and selling in Matanzas.”

The young woman revealed that on Friday night “people who were passing by (…) hit him”, for the “sole fact that he had some money”, and added that, thanks to the school custodian who sensed them and came to his aid, the incident did not escalate.

Likewise, Tápanes warned that perhaps Macías's relatives “are looking for him or do not know his whereabouts,” which is why he a call to the Police and other community authorities to help the man so that he can return to his home. He also asked his Facebook friends to share the information.

In the comments of the post, people who know Macías said that he is always in Cuatro Caminos, in Cotorro, but they had not seen him in the area for days. A woman assured that he lives in Vista Alegre, in the Lawton neighborhood.

The user Yosvany Sigler stated that they went to look for him in Matanzas on Saturday night, but he was no longer at school; and provided the phone number 53459752 in case anyone sees Macías, contact him. “He is always here in Cuatro Caminos, Cotorro. And here several neighbors help him. Please help him,” he wrote.

In Cuba, 3,690 homeless people have been registered between 2014 and 2023, according to data reported in April by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS).

The figure triples the number of people living on the streets in 2012, which was more than 1,100, according to the calculation of the Population and Housing Census of that year, the last one that has been carried out in Cuba.

He Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) recently warned about the increase in begging in the country, and reported that it is increasingly common to see people checking garbage containers in search of food and other resources.

This same week, in a sad event that occurred in a park in Santiago de Cuba, a group of Children saw an old man eating something from a garbage can and yelled at him: “Don't eat garbage!”.
