A spectacular accident took place this Saturday in El Vedado, the capital, where two cars collided and were severely damaged by the impact.
Apparently, the vehicles were driven by a Cuban military officer and a person serving the diplomatic corps accredited in Cuba, although this information could not be confirmed.
The incident took place at the intersection of Calzada Avenue and 4th Street, near the Center for Marti Studies.
Precisely, one of the cars involved in the accident ended up just inches away from crashing into the fence of the institution's courtyard. Judging by the images, it would be the diplomatic vehicle, which seemed to be a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV.
The other car, apparently a Kia Sportage SUV or a Renault Duster, ended up on the opposite sidewalk with serious damage to its bodywork.
"A diplomat and a military officer," specified user Jorge Borroto in the Facebook group 'Bus & Truck Accidents'.
The incident caused the traffic on Calzada to be cut off and mobilized police officers and an ambulance from the Comprehensive Medical Emergency Service (SIUM). At the time of writing this note, the status of the occupants of both vehicles is unknown. Neither the authorities nor the official press are providing information about this unfortunate event.
Despite the low number of diplomatic cars circulating in Cuba, sometimes social media users report accidents involving these vehicles.
In August 2023, a collision between a diplomatic car and a "gazelle" taxi in Havana left four injured people who had to be taken and treated at hospitals in the capital.
The incident occurred at the intersection of 31st Avenue and 30th Street in Miramar, Playa municipality. Reports on social media indicated that the traffic light at this dangerous intersection was not working at the time of the accident due to a lack of electricity.
In February 2022, a diplomatic car hit a motorcyclist in Havana. Following the incident, a police officer who was at the scene let the driver of the car go and told the injured motorcyclist that the fight was in vain because she was a diplomat.
Two years earlier, the young Cuban model and influencer Amanda Ortega Manito passed away due to cranial traumas caused by the impact of a diplomatic car in Havana, according to relatives who spoke with CiberCuba.
The fatal accident occurred in the Havana municipality of Playa, in the early hours of the morning, when the 22-year-old woman and several friends were trying to find transportation to return to their homes after attending a party.
According to sources close to Amanda's family, the driver of the car supposedly was a foreign diplomat based in the Cuban capital, who fled the scene. Unofficially, CiberCuba received information that it was the driver of the Consul of Guatemala in Cuba.
In November 2020, at least one person was injured in a traffic accident that occurred in Havana, when a car with diplomatic plates collided with a private taxi in El Vedado.
The events took place at the intersection of Calzada and Paseo, and according to witnesses of the incident, the impact of the diplomatic car on the right rear door of the American vehicle threw one of the passengers from the almendrón through the door on the other side.
