A 50-year-old Cuban woman is accused of attempted second-degree murder after stabbing an elderly man, with whom she had been living for more than five years, seven times.
The victim's life is not in danger, but she has been left with strong trauma after what happened, according to Telemundo 51.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 9:50 p.m. (local time) at a property located on SW 103rd Avenue and 20th Street, in Westchester, in Miami-Dade County.
The attacker, identified as Niurka Barreto Herrera, struck the victim several times in the left thigh. During the violent incident, the elderly man fell to the ground and was also hit with the handle of the knife.
The man managed to escape and call 911 himself.
The elderly man said in statements to the cited media that he has mixed emotions, as it is a person he had helped.
The Cuban -according to the victim's testimony- has mental health issues and lacks employment.
The man also said that Barreto tried to set the house on fire and that it was not the first time.
It says there are records of other episodes of violence since he gave Niurka Barreto shelter on his property.
The woman could return to the house once she pays the bail of 10,150 dollars that has been imposed on her, although she would have to be accompanied by a police officer.
In addition to second-degree attempted murder, Niurka Barreto Herrera was also charged with "misdeeds amounting to more than a thousand dollars."
Judge Mindy S. Glazer ruled that the Cuban woman cannot have any direct or indirect contact with the victim, and if she violates that order, she will be arrested immediately.
