The clinical condition of the Cuban Dionel Figueroa Calunga, severely injured in the accident that occurred last week at the cement factory in Cienfuegos, has worsened and he remains classified as being in extreme critical condition with life-threatening danger.
Dr. Soraya Izaguirre Hernández, head of the Burn Unit at Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Provincial Hospital, said during a phone call with the Perlavisión telecenter that the patient has "destabilization of their internal environment" and that "it has hemodynamic repercussions."
Without providing too many details about Figueroa Calunga's situation, the doctor indicated that he is going through a "cough-infectious process" that has started from the eighth day.
He said that although all his treatment is covered, the patient's clinical and laboratory status indicates that he has "some repercussions from those very serious and extensive injuries."
Last weekend, Izaguirre Hernández already mentioned other complications of Dionel Figueroa, stating that he had had issues with his heart and lungs.
Regarding the other three workers admitted: One is stable with a report of less severity and in the last hours has been cured and has had no complications; while the other two continue to be reported as "serious but with hemodynamic stability, no fever, no signs of sepsis, stable so far and with a more favorable prognosis."
Last Wednesday, one day after the accident, Alexei Aguilar Valdés, 53 years old and with burns covering only 5% of his body, was discharged.
Ernesto Gálvez, Production Director of the cement factory in Cienfuegos, specified in statements to the official press last week that the accident, which left five injured and one deceased, occurred after the collapse of a hopper that caused a spill of very hot material, which resulted in severe burns to the injured.
The deceased was identified as Raymundo Narciso Sarría, 61 years old, who worked as an electrician at the Engineering Construction Company No. 6 (Ecoing-6).
Deaths from workplace accidents in Cuba increased in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, despite the fact that the total number of incidents decreased by 3.8% during that same period.
Although the variation in absolute numbers was only two people - 25 fatalities this year compared to 23 in 2023 - the percentage represented an 8.7% increase.
The report titled Labor Protection. Selected Indicators, published a few days ago by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), detailed that between January and June of this year, 851 work accidents were recorded, which represents 34 fewer incidents than the 885 that occurred in the same period of 2023.
In May, ONEI reported that the number of workplace accidents in 2023 had decreased compared to 2022, although the number of fatalities remained unchanged. Last year ended with a total of 1,491 workplace accidents, marking a decrease of 10.6% compared to the previous year.
