Two of the workers who were injured in the accident that occurred on Tuesday at the cement factory in Cienfuegos gave their first statements to the state press.
Carlos Aguilar Sabina, 33 years old and with 12% burns on his body, is the one reported as the least serious.
"My burns hurt less, thanks to the care we have received from the doctors; the medications have been necessary, the ointments, the cleaning of the burns. That’s where we have improved," he said.
For his part, Hermes Rojas Campos, 52 years old and with 24% of his body burned, thanked the doctors who have not left his side, "and thanks to God many of us have improved."
Doctor Soraya Izaguirre Hernández, head of the burn unit at Gustavo Aldereguía Hospital, explained that Aguilar Sabina "is a young patient who should not have any difficulties, he will be cured tomorrow."
From Rojas Campos, who is reported to be in serious condition, as well as Francisco Díaz Urquiza, 60 years old, who is very serious with 24% burns, it was reported that both are stable despite their serious conditions.
"We have not had any complications; they are receiving their treatment. Today we started with the third day of treatment with everything they need," she said.
The specialist revealed that the coworkers of the four patients donated blood to the hospital's bank for them.
"We have needed some blood derivatives, but really that response from the colleagues has been very good and the patients know it, because we have told them and that has made them very happy," he emphasized.
In addition to these three injured individuals, a fourth factory worker is hospitalized. This is Dionel Figueroa Calunga, 52 years old, who has 70% burns and is in extremely critical condition.
On the other hand, on Wednesday the fifth injured person in the accident was discharged. His name is Alexei Aguilar Valdes, 53 years old, who had burns on 5% of his body and was able to return home after receiving treatment.
On Tuesday afternoon, an explosion occurred at the Carlos Marx Cement Factory in Cienfuegos, resulting in one worker dead, five injured, and three others trapped, presumably because the explosion caused a hopper to collapse, which kept them trapped until firefighters rescued them.
The deceased was identified as Raymundo Narciso Sarría, 61 years old, who worked as a Cuban electrician for the Engineering Construction Company No. 6 (Ecoing-6).
