A young Cuban named , originally from Las Tunas, has shared his story on TikTok, where he talks about how he has pursued his passion for barbering after moving to Italy nearly two years ago.
In the video posted on the account @la_bodega_del_barbon, Debi* explains that he initially arrived in the European country intending to work as a painter, following in his father's footsteps. However, his true passion had always been barbering.
"Since I was young, I always had a passion for barbering," says the young man, reminiscing about how in Cuba he would cut the hair of his cousins and friends, who saved the 10 pesos that a haircut cost. Upon arriving in Italy, he started visiting the barbershop "La Bodega del Barbón," first as a customer. "Without saying much, I told Carlos that my passion was barbering, and he gave me the opportunity to start here," he comments.
In his inspiring testimony, he also had words of remembrance and affection for his first client: "He was a 13-year-old boy... while I was cutting his hair, my heart was racing. And you won't believe it, but that boy still gets his hair cut by me," he shares with emotion. Throughout the video, he makes it clear how fortunate he feels to be able to do what he loves, even while living in a foreign country.
The video has generated very positive reactions among users, many of whom are Cubans living outside the island. "Greetings, my brother, I am Cuban and working in Romania. My dream is to work in Italy, so if I ever achieve that, I will get my hair cut by you," commented one user. Others sent messages of support, such as "Blessings, my dear, a young man fulfilling his dreams; you have more to achieve, like having your own business!" and "How beautiful, I am also from Tunera. It's great that you are fulfilling your dreams."
The pride in her roots and the support from the Cuban community are evident in the hundreds of comments the video has received. From Spain, Portugal, Germany, and other places, many are sharing their stories and wishing Debi the best in this new phase of her life in Italy.
"I feel very fortunate to be able to work in what I am passionate about, even in a country that is not my own," says Debi, making it clear that this is just the first stage of her journey.
