A cold front is advancing toward the western part of Cuba, bringing rains and thunderstorms

A cold front moving through the Gulf of Mexico is causing a significant deterioration in weather conditions in western Cuba.

This cold front is accompanied by a line of showers, rain, and thunderstorms that are already starting to affect some areas of the far western part of the island, meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez reported on his Facebook profile this Wednesday.

“A cold front is advancing across the Gulf of Mexico, and ahead of it, a thin line of showers, rain, and thunderstorms is approaching the western tip, where some rainfall is already occurring,” the specialist noted.

In a previous post, meteorologist Ruisánchez provided details about the impact of the cold front arriving this Wednesday in western Cuba, emphasizing the significant changes that will occur in the region's weather conditions.

The frontal system will bring cloudy skies with showers, rain, and isolated thunderstorms, beginning to affect the westernmost part of the country from the early hours of the afternoon.

These conditions will gradually move towards the other western provinces during the afternoon and evening.

On Thursday, a significant drop in temperatures is expected in the west, with readings between 22 and 25ºC during midday.

The perceived temperature will be lower due to winds coming from the north and northeast, reaching speeds of 20 to 35 km/h, with higher gusts. These conditions will result in what the specialist described as “a winter day.”

Additionally, it was noted that swells are expected on the northwestern coast, with waves reaching heights of 2 to 3 meters, which could hinder maritime navigation in those areas.

The cold front will move toward the central region, where it will dissipate. However, temperatures in this area will also drop, although the rest of the country will not experience significant changes.

Finally, the specialist explained that cloudy skies and rain will continue in the western region due to the remnants of the cold front and the transport of low clouds associated with the northeastern air flow, which is characteristic of these climatic conditions.

This cold front signifies a typical event of the winter season, with conditions that impact both the population and daily activities, as well as maritime operations in the western region of the island.

Recently, the Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) reported a very cold early morning in Cuba, with temperatures dropping to 8.3 °C in Matanzas, due to the influence of high continental pressure and a dry, stable air mass.
