Ana Belkis Ferrer García, sister of José Daniel Ferrer, the Cuban opposition leader, has denied rumors regarding a possible release of her brother and other political prisoners in Cuba.
Through a message on social media, Ferrer García clarified that, so far, neither she nor #SOSFerrer has received any notification from the Cuban authorities regarding a potential release of José Daniel Ferrer.
"Many friends ask us if the Castro-Canel dictatorship has notified #SOSFerrer or the family about a possible release, and the answer is: NO," affirmed Ferrer García. He also noted that so far, no political prisoner with whom they maintain contact has been informed about their release.
Ferrer García also denounced the manipulative tactics of the Cuban regime, which might be using the release of some prisoners as a political negotiating tool, without guaranteeing the release of all political prisoners.
In his message, he emphasized that the exact number of released political prisoners is still uncertain, as some of those freed may be common prisoners or individuals aligned with the regime.
José Daniel Ferrer, along with other prisoners such as Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Castillo, continues to be confined under harsh conditions in a unit alongside common prisoners, where he is denied the right to have basic items like a deck of cards.
Despite the recent violence at the detention center, where one inmate attacked another with a knife, Ferrer continues to be subjected to inhumane conditions.
Furthermore, the Cuban dictatorship has repeatedly suspended Ferrer's right to make phone calls, and only recently, after a month of denial, has he been allowed to communicate with his family.
Since the Cuban regime announced on Tuesday that it would release 553 prisoners following an agreement with the Vatican, there has been a growing outcry on social media from activists, artists, and opposition members demanding the release of all political prisoners in Cuba.
The recent release of some prisoners, announced on January 15, 2025, has fueled demands for justice, as the number of those detained for political reasons remains above 1,000.
