The Cuban regime announced that starting next week, 15 new ambulances will begin operating in the Cuban capital as part of an experimental project to improve emergency medical services.

This project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), the Ministry of Transport (MITRANS), the entity MCV Comercial S.A., and the Government of Havana, under the management of the Integrated Medical Emergency System (SIUM), announced on Facebook by the Minister of Transport, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila.

The completely new ambulances are equipped with advanced technology, including a GPS control system, which will allow for more efficient and safer management of medical transfers, the official stated.

He explained that the responsibility for ensuring the availability of vehicles and trained drivers will rest with the Ministry of Transport, while the MINSAP will be in charge of providing medical personnel and the necessary equipment to deliver quality care.

In addition, the joint venture MCV Comercial S.A. will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the ambulances, ensuring their proper functioning during emergency transfers.

This initiative also includes the hiring of the transport service, aimed at optimizing the healthcare system's response capacity in the capital.

The ambulance project comes after several years during which thousands of Cubans have suffered from a shortage of ambulances, with many patients losing their lives while waiting for this service.

In April of last year, the Cuban government signed a contract with the company MCV Comercial S.A. – an authorized distributor of Mercedes Benz in Cuba – for the "experimental exploitation" of the 15 ambulances in the public health system.

In March of that year, a man admitted to the Joaquín Albarrán Clinical Surgical Hospital (Clínico de 26) in Havana reported that he had been waiting for more than two days for an ambulance to take him to another facility for a tomography.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, reports have increased of people who died while waiting for several hours for an ambulance.
