Mailén Díaz Almaguer, the sole survivor of the tragic plane crash that occurred in Havana in 2018, spoke about her story in an interview with CNN en Español, where she shared details of her physical and emotional recovery, in a narrative that is moving for its strength, its faith, and the harsh reality she has faced since the catastrophe.

Mailén recounted that she does not remember the details of the plane that day, only fragments of the airport, and that it was in the hospital where she regained consciousness and learned that her husband had died in the accident. There, her ordeal began: she had the lower part of her left leg amputated and was left paralyzed from the waist down. Since then, she has faced numerous surgeries, long physiotherapy sessions, and a life marked by pain and the struggle to move forward.

Grateful to the Cuban doctors who have treated her, she believes her survival is a miracle from God. She is currently studying to become a seminarian at a Methodist church in Havana and expressed her desire to travel abroad to continue her treatment. She has also learned to drive, adapting to her disability.

The young woman, originally from Holguín, has been living in Siboney, Playa municipality, in Havana since the accident, where she purchased a home with the compensation money. She is also reported to have acquired a car, as seen in social media posts.

In the video shared by CNN, Mailén also sent a message of encouragement to the sole survivor of the recent plane crash in India: “God has a purpose for your life as well, and since we are here, we have to keep going… and fight until we find that purpose.”

The flight DMJ-972, operated by Global Air for Cubana de Aviación, crashed shortly after taking off from Havana en route to Holguín. A subsequent investigation attributed the causes to human error. "The most likely cause of the accident was the actions of the crew and their errors in weight and balance calculations, which led to the loss of control and the aircraft's descent during the takeoff phase," said the IACC in a statement released in 2019. Initially, there were three survivors, but two died in the hospital. Only Mailén survived.

Reports of abandonment and threats

In 2022, four years after the accident, the young woman publicly denounced the neglect of the Cuban government. Through a live broadcast on Facebook, visibly affected, she recounted the difficulties in obtaining basic medical supplies such as gloves, lubricant for catheters, and the medication Nitrofurantoin, essential for preventing urinary infections.

"I'm not living the sweet life," she stated. "Many people see my life one way, but it really isn't like that. I also struggle just like everyone else."

After that complaint, Mailén received threats on social media, one of which she publicly shared: “Mailén, we’re going to have to deal with you. Among so many who were on the plane, did this being have to be left?”

Despite the attacks, she also received numerous expressions of support, including one from the comedian Andy Vázquez in Miami, who coordinated the shipment of medical supplies to help her.

To fly again

In 2021, during a trip abroad, Mailén boarded a plane for the first time since the accident. In an emotional video recently posted, she showcased footage of the day she confronted that fear and shared views from above, as a symbol of personal triumph.

"It's very sad that your life changes and becomes so difficult, and that it isn't made any easier within the sadness," she had said earlier. Her current testimony reflects an inner transformation, fueled by her faith and her struggle to regain a quality of life.

A symbol of resilience

The story of Mailén Díaz Almaguer has touched the Cuban society and has reignited discussions on air safety, long-term comprehensive medical care, and the lack of transparency in the processes of compensation and support for victims.

Seven years after the accident that changed her life, Mailén speaks again, not from a place of pain, but from a stance of reconstruction. Her voice, now amplified in international media, confirms that she is still alive… and determined to live.
