The former Cuban athlete Javier Sotomayor celebrated this Sunday the 32nd anniversary of his historic jump of 2.45 meters, which still stands as the absolute world record in high jump.

From his hometown of Matanzas, the so-called "Prince of Heights" shared an emotional message through his Facebook account, thanking those who remember him year after year.

Two years ago, I celebrated the 30th anniversary of my world record as it should be, with great fanfare. Last year, I found myself during this time at the Olympic Games in Paris. Today, as I celebrate 32 years since I jumped 2.45 m, I am in the land that saw my birth, in my beloved Matanzas,” wrote the legendary athlete.

Sotomayor, the only human being to exceed 2.45 m, achieved this feat on July 27, 1993, in Salamanca, Spain.

Three decades later, no athlete has managed to surpass that mark. His record is one of the longest-standing in the history of world athletics.

"From here, I thank those who have already congratulated me, many of whom have not forgotten to do so for years. My hugs from above," he added, closing his post.

Sotomayor's record is a symbol of how far Cuban sports have come.

However, since the regime itself and its so-called "achievements" belong to a glorious but distant past, far removed from the current sporting reality of the country, it is increasingly characterized by stagnation and the brain drain.

The career of Javier Sotomayor continues to receive international recognition, as demonstrated when he was honored in Madrid with the Glory of Legends award for his historical contribution to athletics.

The award highlights the lasting impact of his world record in high jump and his legacy as an icon of Cuban sport.

Some time ago, Sotomayor himself expressed pride in his impact on the sport by stating that he was pleased to have inspired several generations, although he also acknowledged the challenges that Cuban athletics faces today.

Even outside the tracks, Sotomayor has sought to maintain a connection with the public. In recent years, he decided to venture into the private sector and opened a bar in Havana, blending his legendary image with a new role in Cuban society.

This initiative also symbolizes the need to reinvent oneself in the face of the limitations of the national sports system.
