The informal currency market in Cuba has broken the stability it maintained for nearly a week following a slight increase in the Convertible Currency (MLC) confirmed in recent hours.

At dawn on this September 4th, the struggling virtual currency used by the Cuban regime has risen from 190 to 192 CUP, an unexpected increase of two pesos.

The MLC, which had been experiencing several weeks of successive declines, resists dying and shows a puzzling rebound.

The dollar, for its part, remains valued at 410 CUP; while the euro continues with an estimated selling average of 460 CUP, as revealed by the daily report from elTOQUE.

In July, Manuel Marrero announced transformations in the official foreign exchange market in Cuba, changes that - as he indicated - are expected to be implemented in the second half of the year. However, for now, there are no updates on the matter.

In recent days, the Cuban regime announced that the average monthly salary in the country rose to 6,649 pesos during the first half of 2025, reflecting a 16.4% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

The data, released by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) and reproduced by Cubadebate, was presented as a positive indicator of the official economic policy.

However, far from providing relief to the population, this increase translates into little or nothing against the deep inflationary crisis and the ongoing depreciation of the Cuban peso.

The numbers clash with the reality of everyday life: the informal market rate reveals that the dollar remains at 410 CUP, so this new average salary is barely equivalent to about 16.22 dollars per month. In other words, what a worker earns in a month is not enough to cover even a small part of their needs.
