The White House announced that it plans to revoke a series of regulations that required airlines to compensate passengers for canceled or delayed flights due to reasons within the companies' control.

The measure, recently published, involves removing a proposed regulation notice that aimed to ensure “essential services” and additional benefits for the affected users.

The Department of Transportation had considered requiring airlines—both domestic and foreign—to provide meals, free rebooking, hotel accommodations, transportation, and customer service in cases of cancellations or delays attributable to the company.

For his part, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated on X that the revocation “was not a surprise” and recalled that the 2023 proposal also aimed to eliminate hidden charges in airline fares.

A spokesperson from the Department of Transportation told CNN that the agency will continue to enforce all consumer protection requirements mandated by Congress, including refunds in the event of cancellations or significant delays.

However, he specified that the regulations implemented during Joe Biden's administration, went beyond what is stipulated by law, and therefore, they will be reconsidered, as they are deemed “extralegal”.

In May 2023, President Joe Biden stated that his administration would draft regulations requiring airlines to compensate passengers for disrupted flights and affirmed that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).
