A new tragedy once again highlights the violence faced by women in Cuba: nurse Rosa Idania (Rosy) Ferrer Pérez, 46 years old, was strangled by her partner in the batey Elpidio Gómez, municipality of Palmira, in Cienfuegos, as confirmed by the Observatorio de Género Alas Tensas (OGAT) on their social media.
Rosy, recognized in her community for her work in the health sector, had suffered violence for years at the hands of the alleged aggressor: Arisbel Suárez. Her murder took place in the very home they shared, in a context where victims lack effective protection routes and institutional resources.
Alas Tensas called for empathy towards women like Rosy, who are trapped in cycles of violence from which it is extremely difficult to escape in a country where there are no state shelters, comprehensive psychological support, preventive campaigns, or a specific legal framework against gender-based violence.
More details about the shocking case
The page on Facebook “Nio Reporting a Crime” reported that the alleged aggressor is named Arisbel Suárez, known by the nickname “Felipillo.”
Suárez was the victim's partner and had fled after murdering her on the night of November 30. Reports indicate that the man was the one who beat and strangled the victim, a fact that shocked the community.
Reports from neighbors and media indicate that Arisbel Suárez has a criminal record and has allegedly been jailed for crimes related to the illegal slaughter of livestock.
A femicide verified by community networks and independent observatories
The crime was reported by citizens, activists, and independent media, and later verified by the community observation networks of OGAT and Yo Sí Te Creo en Cuba (YSTCC), which confirmed the events with local sources.
The platforms maintain a parallel record due to the absence of official statistics and the lack of recognition of femicide as a legal category in Cuba.
The figures that reveal a national emergency
According to the updated data from OGAT and YSTCC as of December 3, 2025, Cuba accounts for:
42 femicides
1 murder of a man for gender-related reasons
16 attempted femicides
3 cases still under verification
Additionally, they are in the process of investigation:
1 case in Santiago de Cuba
2 in Camagüey
2 in Artemisa
1 in Villa Clara
1 in Granma
These figures, supported only by independent organizations, highlight an institutional void that leaves women unprotected and without effective mechanisms to report, escape, or receive assistance.
Condolences
Alas Tensas expressed its condolences to Rosy's adult children, her family, friends, and patients, who today mourn her and remember her on social media.
Rosy's death, like that of so many other women on the Island, is an urgent warning: without real public policies, without shelters, without protection, and without governmental will, gender-based violence will continue to claim lives.
