The Provincial Defense Council of Havana quarantine was declared this Thursday in the El Carmelo neighborhood of Vedado, in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, as part of the measures to contain the coronavirus in Cuba.

The closure of access to El Carmelo – which covers from Calle 6 to 28, and from 21 to Avenida Malecón – will start this Friday April 3, starting at 8:00 at night.

It is the second community in the country that is ordered to isolate itself in the country, after it was decreed last Tuesday quarantine isolation for all inhabitants of the Camilo Cienfuegos community of the El Canal popular council, in the Pinar del Río municipality of Consolación del Sur, given the increase in cases of local transmission of coronavirus.

El Carmelo has the highest number of people infected by contacts with foreigners and with Cubans who arrived from abroad in the province of Havana; In total there are eight patients positive for coronavirus.

No one will be able to enter or leave the area, except for some people who will be given a safe passage because their departure is considered essential, and who must take a COVID-19 test.

The isolated area will have four to six entrances and exits, and no public transport bus or taxi will be able to circulate through the area.

A report broadcast in the main broadcast of the National Television News (NTV) on Thursday night indicated that Plaza de la Revolución is the municipality with the most positive cases of coronavirus in the country, which is why epidemiological control has been intensified in the areas. and most affected neighborhoods, such as El Vedado,

Dr. Silvia González, a first-degree specialist at office 38 in Vedado, said that they are observing three travelers who arrived from the United States in mid-March and are in isolation inside their homes.

Medical students have reinforced the search in the blocks surrounding their homes and verify possible cases of damage on a daily basis.

The president of the Provincial Defense Council of Havana, Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar, assured that basic resources for the residents of the neighborhood are guaranteed, as well as care for vulnerable people.

Torres Iríbar reported that each municipality will act in accordance with the solvency and administration of its resources and will be accountable to the government but will make the decisions that correspond to it.

At the conference, it was also reported that the basic sanitation brigades to control leaks and sewage discharges will multiply their work and that the interruption in the Cuenca Sur supply source has already been resolved.

In the eastern area of the city there are still problems with the El Gato fountain, and in Guanabacoa some affected areas still receive pipe service.

Likewise, the Havana Prosecutor's Office requested the arrest, in the municipality of La Lisa, of people who were fined one thousand pesos for raising the prices of food intended for elderly people under the Family Care System. (SAF), which is considered "a serious violation."

Torres Iríbar ordered the immediate closure of establishments in public places that still have alcoholic beverages among their offerings, and recalled that it goes against the measures directed by the government during the coronavirus crisis.

"That is indiscipline. We cannot allow this lack of control," he said.

They insisted on strict compliance with the measures that the country's government has been reporting and on social distancing to stop the spread of the coronavirus in the national territory.
