The Cuban delegation concluded its presentation at the Tokyo Paralympic Gamesin 35th place on the medal table, after obtaining four gold medals, one silver and one bronze.
The national team was below what was achieved in Rio de Janeiro 2016, when it won 15 medals, distributed in eight gold, one silver and six bronze, which allowed it to be ranked 18th by country.
All the Cuban medals in Tokyo were won by representatives of athletics,highlighting the role of sprinter Omara Durand, who again won the gold medal in the 100, 200 and 400 meters (m), T12 category (deep visual impairments), repeating the performance achieved in the 2016 Olympic event.
Durand finished with a world record of 23.02 seconds in the double hectometer final, and now has eight titles in this type of event. He also improved the mark of 23.05 seconds set in Rio de Janeiro. The woman from Santiago has not lost a race for more than 10 years.
Likewise, the name of Robiel Yankiel Sol Cervantes, who is only 18 years old, stands out.with a Paralympic record of 7.46 m in the long jump in the T46 category (upper limb affected). The young man won the first gold medal for Cuba in this Olympic event.
Leonardo Diazwon bronze in the discus throw, from category F56 (wheelchair), with 43.36 m, his most outstanding record of the year.
Closing this Sunday in the Japanese capital, the contest was largely dominated by the Chinese delegation (96-60-51), followed by Great Britain (41-38-45) and the United States (37-36-31).
In the Latin American region, the most outstanding performance corresponded to Brazil, which, with 22 gold medals, 20 silver and 30 bronze, managed to place itself in seventh place.
At the closing ceremony, Paris took over from Tokyo as the next host of the 2024 Paralympic Games, with a show in which a French artist performed the European country's anthem in sign language.
