The Cuban government is seeking international financing to promote a change in the energy matrix in the country, which is going through a deep crisis due to its obsolete facilities.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will provide financial support for the construction of 15 megawatts in photovoltaic parks in Cuba.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Energy and Mines of Cuba, Nicolás Liván Arronte, who participates in the Dialogue on Energy Transition in Berlin, Germany.

Liván Arronte reported on his Twitter account that he held a meeting with Francesco La Camera, general director of the intergovernmental organization, dedicated to promoting the adoption of renewable energies.

"IRENA will continue to cooperate to change the energy matrix," he announced.

The official also met with the general director of the International Solar Alliance, with whom he exchanged about current and future renewable energy projects for our country.

He also held meetings with the president of the German Renewable Energy Federation, to talk about the promotion of projects with German companies, and with directors of the company Siemens Energy.

"They showed willingness to resume negotiations for the development of joint projects in Cuba in the energy sector," he said.

Recently the Cuban government begancharge in freely convertible currency (MLC) for contracting solar energy to MSMEs, cooperatives and industries.

The Electrical Company Union (UNE) reported the signing of a photovoltaic energy contract in the non-residential sector, with payment in MLC and that will extend for five years. Those interested may receive benefits for contracting energy from photovoltaic systems for 2, 5, 10 or 20 years, without the need to install a panel system in their premises.

Given the inability to find investors in the private sector, the State turns to state MSMEs to begin promoting the government's commitment to clean energy.

In 2021 the governmentcalled on citizens to invest MLC in the development of solar energy. But in the midst of the current crisis, Cubans use the little currency they manage to collect to buy essential products.

The electricity company created a bank account in MLC to "provide the option of contracting a certain photovoltaic power in kW by natural and legal persons." In exchange, these contracts have monthly benefits for a period of up to 20 years.

The UNE indicated that it is not necessary to have an area available to install a photovoltaic system, nor to import the components. Only a “transfer of MLC to the electrical union account” is required.

In July of last year, after the 11J protests, the government authorized natural persons tonon-commercial import of photovoltaic systems, parts and pieces, free of taxes in Customs.
