The Cuban artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara produced a new work from the Guanajay maximum security prison where he servesa sentence of five years in prisonfor his oppositional stance to the island's regime,

“The work is titledSchrödinger's Cat I and will be made public through a press conference broadcast from the artist's official Facebook page, this Wednesday, September 14 at 11:00 pm (Cuba time) that will be moderated by art curators Yanelis Núñez and Claudia Genlui ”,reported, through a statement on Facebook, the official page of Otero Alcántara.

This new work by Otero Alcántara is part of a reflective gesture that “makes us question his individual sacrifice since July 11, 2021, places his posture of resistance, his life itself as a work of art. Once again the human being merges with the artist. There are no limits. Likewise, he invites all interested parties to accompany him in this work,” the statement says.

“In extreme conditions, deprived of his basic freedoms and being a victim of constant psychological torture, Alcántara continues to appeal to art as hope and puts the Cuban dictatorial regime in crisis,” he concludes.

A few days ago, it emerged thatOtero Alcántara was recognized among the six winners of the first Impacto Príncipe Claus award, endowed with 50 thousand euros.

The jury for this award, which is awarded every two years, argued that “Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara is a Cuban artist and human rights defender whose actions are critical of the conditions that many Cubans face.”

Furthermore, the jury highlighted that this Cuban artist “has faced continuous persecution for his performances. His works have been confiscated and he has been forcibly detained on multiple occasions. His continued detention has sparked protests and statements of solidarity from international artists who support his unwavering fight for freedom of cultural expression in Cuba.”

The leader of the San Isidro Movement is serving a five-year prison sentence in this maximum security prison, where he has been the victim of attacks and provocations, a State Security tactic to provoke a conflict and aggravate his situation.

During this time in prison, the independent artist has seen his health deteriorate. As a result of the several hunger strikes he has undertaken as a gesture of protest and resistance, the artivist suffered paralysis and an eye injury from which he still suffers.

In mid-August, it was learned that Otero Álcantara was being held in a punishment cell in the Guanajay prison, in Artemisa, where he has been for more than a year.

The artist sufferedan attack by a common prisoner, after which the prison authorities transferred him, and not his attacker, to a walled-up cell in solitary confinement.
