Cuban students obtain bronze medal in International Chemistry Olympiad

After six years without winning medals in this type of competition, Cuba re-entered theranking thanks to the results of Acosta, a graduate of the Máximo Gómez Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE), from Camagüey, and Valdés, a student from the IPVCE Mártires de Humboldt 7, from Artemisa.

The competition had two parts, one theoretical and another at the laboratory level, which “tested the knowledge of representatives from 90 countries” in the contest, held from July 16 to 25, Acosta told theCuban News Agency (ACN).

This is the first time that Acosta participates in the IChO, a competition in which he was able to demonstrate the preparation received from his coaches, including ProfessorJulio Antonio Rodriguez Benitez, with 30 years of experience in that work, according to the report.

“We carried out very in-depth training with César, since he was taught topics from all aspects of the competition program conceived for this subject in pre-university education, and based on his discipline and dedication he was able to achieve this dream,” Rodríguez highlighted.

The note ofACN does not include statements from Valdés, the other representative of Cuba at the IChO 2023, who according to theresults published on the Olympiad site He also deserved a bronze medal.

In October 2022, Acosta won a silver medal at the XXVI Ibero-American Chemistry Olympiad (OIAQ), held virtually in Mexico. Other threeCuban students achieved gold, silver and bronze medals.

This year, after completing high school, the young man will complete Active Military Service, mandatory for all men in Cuba, and then he will enter university to study Physics.

The previous week, theCuban students Ián David Lorenzo García and Dalia Oliver Ballesteros won a silver medal at the XXV Mathematical Olympiad of Central America and the Caribbean (OMCC), held in El Salvador.

IPVCE student Vladimir Ilich Lenin and IPVCE student Ernesto Guevara accumulated 31 and 27 points, respectively, and placed Cuba in fifth position in the competition, with 58 points.
