The ex-presidentDonald Trump He insisted that migration to the United States must be legal and gave the example of the strategy that is being developed with Cuba.
In interview withUnivision Trump said that Venezuelans, Nicaraguans and Cubans are good people but they must enter the United States through legal channels.
"They have to enter legally and we can work fast. We are doing it with Cuba because people have to enter legally. "Right now, the largest group of migrants in a caravan is coming through Mexico," Trump said.
The former president commented that this type of migration, massive and disorderly, cannot be allowed. In his opinion, the Central American states are taking advantage to cleanse their countries of social corruption and sending criminals to the United States.
"They are not sending us the best people from their countries. They want to keep the best and they send us gang members, people with mental problems. Good people are also entering but we have enormous numbers of murderers and criminals who pass through Mexico" Trump said.
He warned that softening economic sanctions on migrant-sending countries, such as Venezuela and Cuba, will not have any positive effect for the United States.
"The Biden administration wants to give those countries thousands and thousands of taxpayer dollars so that they can have economic development and that will prevent people from coming to the United States. How silly that is!" he said and recalled that his solution to the migration crisis are thehot deportations from the border.
The current United States strategy with Cuba to stop migration has been promoted by the Joe Biden administration, which since January 2023 has kept different programs open that facilitate the flow of migrants legally andresumed deportation flights.
Among these programs are the traditional Family Reunification, Modernized Family Reunification, Safe Mobility, asylum appointments through CBP One for those waiting in Mexico and theHumanitarian Parole, with which more than 50 thousand Cubans They have arrived in the United States in less than a year.
It was also a Democratic administration that put an important brake on migration from Cuba, in 2017 whenBarack Obama eliminated "wet foot, dry foot" policy, which protected and provided benefits to Cubans who touched North American soil after crossing the border or entering by sea, illegally.
Trump prefers to ignore the evidence and impose his style of conflict resolution. The immigration issue is an axis of his race to regain the US presidency and last week, in Florida, he left clear guidelines on how he plans to solve it.
During theRepublican Party Freedom Summit, held in Kissimmee, promised unprecedented measures, such as a massive deportation policy.
