Cuba will paralyze the sale and purchase of livestock between individuals, as part of an exercise of control over the possession, use and legality of land and livestock.
In statements to the newspaperGranma The general director of Livestock of the Ministry of Agriculture (Minag), Arián Gutiérrez Velázquez, said that "as of February 15,they paralyze buying and selling movements of larger livestock in the country".
Only the "transfer of animals for delivery to slaughter for balance, or emergency sanitary slaughter" will be authorized.
I announce that starting March 1, Agriculture will carry out a special control action, with limited use, to evaluate the current situation of the livestock sector in Cuba.
Those who need to sell their livestock during this period must do so to state entities, with prior authorization, he stressed.
This will be done through an exercise of control over the possession, use and legality of the land and livestock, which will involve all natural and legal owners.
He added that, with this research, the aim is to obtain more up-to-date information on the stocks of large livestock – cattle, horses and buffaloes – to update the country's Livestock Registry.
He also said that it will provide information on the possession or use of equipment, technologies and inputs for the production of livestock.
There will be no surprise visits to detect deficiencies; The owners will be notified in advance of the day that the commission will visit their farm, so that "at the time of the control, the producers have their herd updated in the livestock registry and have it marked."
Currently, more than 200,000 owners of cattle and buffalo are registered, both natural and legal, and nearly 167,000 of horses.
This audit of existing livestock on the island occurs after last yearseveral provinces They lost thousands of animals due to theft and sacrifice and due to malnutrition.
For example in Holguín more than7,400 head of cattle were lost for theft and illegal slaughter.
