"After two years, four months and 10 days of suffering an unjust prison, the patriot of Camagüey is back on the streets," said opposition member Bárbaro de Céspedes this Tuesday after being released.

In a brief message left on his Facebook wall, the political prisoner showed the documentation that proves that he had fully complied with his sentence and said that "today, February 20, the dictatorship freed me and from today I am on the streets."

"I came out stronger, with my firmest principles, my firmest ideas, they will never be able to break me and I will continue to travel the path I chose, the path of freedom for my country and my people," he declared.

Likewise, he thanked the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights for supporting his cause, helping his family and the relatives of political prisoners on the island.

Known as “The Patriot of Camagüey”, De Céspedes was imprisoned for participating in the popular protests of July 11, 2021. He was accused of attack and instigation to commit a crime in a controversial trial, his family then reported.

At the end of 2022, the opponent regretted that Cubans had forgotten him. "Unfortunately I have been abandoned. The Patriot has not died, the Patriot is simply imprisoned," he said in a live interview during a screening.

Despite this, he stated that "I will never give up" and expressed his solidarity with the rest of the prisoners who are serving unjust sanctions in the prisons.Cuban prisons for asking for freedom for Cuba.
