Cuban denounces poor water quality in Mayabeque

The young man said he had laboratory tests that indicate the presence of Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli "and many more things" in the water, and attributed the increase in digestive disorders in Santa Cruz del Norte to this.

A Cuban citizen denounced the poor quality of tap water that reaches the homes of Santa Cruz del Norte, in the province of Mayabeque, which would be the cause of the increase in digestive disorders in the town.

“We have had water problems for several days,” said the young man, showing a container with water collected at his house. “In this case we have water that has microorganisms that can be seen to be alive. That comes from the water pipe, that doesn't come from anywhere else.”

In the video, shared through social networks of the journalist Mario J. Pentón, you can clearly see the movement of “microorganisms” in the water. Despite the evidence, local authorities told the complainant “that the water is not contaminated.”

“I have evidence in documents that the water has Pseudomonas, has Escherichia coli and many more things. That is one of the causes of the diarrhea outbreaks here in Santa Cruz del Norte,” said the young man.

Despite having informed those responsible for water purification in the municipality, the authorities did not believe the citizen's complaint and were reluctant to collaborate in the investigation.

“Right now I had a small discussion with the province's hydrology people. They say that the water has no problem, that it is as if it were a common cold,” said the affected person.

Despite not giving credence to the Santa Cruz del Norte resident's complaint, the authorities promised to take samples of the water to verify its quality.

“They say everything is fine for them, so how is it possible that people get sick? I'm going to upload the document later so you can see that the water does have shit. The water does have shit in it,” the young man insisted, calling on the neighbors to protest the situation.

The Pseudomonas They constitute a genus of bacilli, among which some are considered human pathogens. For their part, pathogenic strains of the bacteria Escherichia coli They cause diarrheal diseases and are an important cause of death in children under 5 years of age, especially in the regions of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

In mid-February, the Cuban activist Alberto Turís Betancourt Pérez He went out to protest with a sign to denounce the slums in Old Havana and the contamination of drinking water.

The young man stated that the water was contaminated with feces and that the Aguas de La Habana company did not come forward to solve the problem. Hygiene and Epidemiology officials had only gone to justify the situation but did not resolve anything, he denounced.

At the end of 2023, the Cuban regime announced the increase in the water rate as part of the "package" of measures to achieve "macroeconomic stability."

As a result of the announcement, a Cuban resident in the province of Cienfuegos reacted indignantly and showed on social networks the quality of the liquid you found in your cistern, full of accumulated dirt.

"The Cuban prime minister stated in his last 'appearance' that services such as water, electricity, among others, would increase in price for Cubans, since the price they had was laughable," he said. Joyce Alvarez.

Last year several Cubans carried out protests in Havana due to the permanent shortage of drinking water in some areas. The regime recognized last June that more than 200 thousand people lacked water only in the country's capital and new service cuts were expected.

However, the contamination of drinking water aggravates the situation of shortage, as it adds dozens of families to a crisis due to the availability of the vital liquid.

In mid-November, more than a dozen Cuban women, many of them accompanied by their children, closed the intersection of Monte and Agramonte streets in Old Havana in protest against the prolonged water shortage in that Havana municipality.

The mothers They blocked the street with empty buckets and water tanks to prevent traffic, while they claimed to be tired of living without drinking water.
