Italian businessman murdered after an argument in Cuba

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country's embassy in Cuba are following up on the investigation into this case.

An argument between two Italian citizens in the Cuban province of Las Tunas ended with the death of one of them, a 76-year-old businessman, who apparently suffered a blow to a blunt object on March 1.

The victim was a Calabrian businessman, calledFrancesco Sciammarella, who had lived in Cuba for a long time and was found lying on the ground in a pool of blood, according to reportsItalian local media.

His alleged murderer wasRolando Di Gregorio, 56 years old, who apparently owed 500 euros to the deceased and when he asked for it to be returned he was denied, the reports indicate.mentioned sources citing the reconstruction of the events.

Di Gregorio had arrived in the town only a week earlier and confessed that it was a “tragic death”, after having pushed the 76-year-old man, although he denies having intended to kill him.

The businessman apparently hit Di Gregorio with a helmet, lost his balance and fell backwards, hitting his head on the corner of a step. Due to the wound on his forehead, the man was taken to the hospital where he received seven stitches. Francesco Sciammarella died of a brain hemorrhage.

20 years ago, Sciammarella decided to go to the Caribbean islands, between Santo Domingo and Cuba, to be close to his wife and two children, but his intention was to live six months abroad and six in Abruzzo, the Italian town where he was originally from. .

The case appears to be under investigation by the Cuban police authorities, although no official media has reported on the event.

It was also reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, together with the Embassy of that nation in Cuba, are following up on the issue.
