More of66,000 Russian tourists visited Cuba so far this year, and the island's authorities hope to maintain that pace in the arrival of travelers during the coming months.
Cristina Leon, Tourism Counselor of the Cuban Embassy in Russia, toldLatin Press that from January 1 to March 31, 2024, 66,887 Russian tourists traveled to Cuba.
He pointed out that it is arecord number, since in the same period of 2023 the country received 32,224 people from that nation.
The Cuban authorities assure that they areadvancing in negotiations with airlines to increase the number of flights from Russia. They plan to attract investors and hotel companies from that country to the tourism sector in Cuba.
Currently there are severalregular flights between Russia and Cuba. Slavic travelers reach several tourist centers such as Havana, Varadero and Cayo Coco.
In March the regime warned that it was taking economic measures that would allow it to increasemore than 200,000 arrivals of travelers from Russia. Among these measures was the entry into force of the use of MIR cards.
"The influx of travelers currently exceeds the record numbers that date back to 2019, with more than 184 thousand visitors," said Cuban Minister Juan Carlos García Granda, in March, during the International Tourism Fair (MITT), in Moscow.
